Shuaiba-5 Plant Ensures Makkah Water Supply during Hajj Season
The Shuaiba-5 Plant, built on the western coast of Saudi Arabia, serves as the primary starting point for the water supply journey to Makkah and the holy sites, and stands as the main source of water production during the Hajj season.
With a production capacity of 664,000 cubic meters per day, it is considered one of the largest and most advanced desalination projects, and plays a vital role in ensuring water supply during peak consumption periods, especially during the Hajj.
Shuaiba-5 is distinguished by its high operational efficiency, achieving the lowest energy consumption rate in its category globally with 2.34 kilowatt-hour per cubic meter. This performance is attributed to the use of cutting-edge technologies, including advanced reverse osmosis membranes, pressure recovery systems, highly efficient pretreatment processes, and partial integration with solar energy.
The plant's performance aligns with the national water sector's target of reducing energy use in the industry by 30% by 2030 through investments in technology and operational efficiency enhancements. This is part of a comprehensive approach to ensure long-term water supply security and sustainability.
