King Abdulaziz University Records Medical Achievement with Pediatric Kidney Transplant
King Abdulaziz University recorded a new medical achievement after a specialized medical team succeeded in ending the suffering of a 13-year-old girl who had been experiencing advanced kidney failure, through a kidney transplant using a donated kidney from her mother.
The patient was closely monitored at the university’s Pediatric Nephrology Center of Excellence after being diagnosed with a rare condition known as congenital small kidneys, which led to the deterioration of vital functions. Using advanced surgical techniques, the medical team employed laparoscopic surgery to remove the kidney from the mother, after which the transplant was successfully performed for the girl without any complications.
The significance of this achievement lies in the strategic planning that extended over three years of preparation and readiness. Establishing the program required mobilizing the efforts of multiple medical specialties and applying the latest tissue-matching protocols, along with comprehensive health evaluations, to ensure the sustainability of the transplanted kidney’s function for the patient and the safety of the donor.
