Salma Geopark: Geological Diversity and Historical Sites in Hail

Salma Geopark in Hail Region brings together rock formations, volcanic features and historical evidence, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the region’s geological heritage and its connection to the history of human settlement there.

The site was officially included in UNESCO Global Geoparks in April 2025.

The geopark covers more than 3,145 square kilometers and features rock formations that developed over successive periods of geological time.

Director General of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) branch in Hail Region Abdullah Al-Buraiki said that Salma Geopark is distinguished by the diversity of its geological features, including volcanic formations, craters, and volcanic cones.

He noted that the site’s exceptional value extends to the historical and archaeological sites surrounding it, including Faid Historic City and the historic Darb Zubaydah (Zubaydah's trail).

Including Salma Geopark in the UNESCO Global Geoparks provides an opportunity to showcase its features internationally and support geological and cultural tourism, while raising awareness of the value of its natural and human heritage and the importance of preserving it.
