Saudi Markets Flourish with Locally Grown Figs as Harvest Season Peaks
Saudi markets are experiencing a surge in locally grown fruit as the summer harvest season reaches its peak, with abundant supplies of diverse produce. Demand remains strong for a wide range of fruits renowned for their freshness and high nutritional value.
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture highlighted figs as one of the Kingdom's most promising local crops, with total production exceeding 29,600 tons, reinforcing their contribution to greater self-sufficiency and strengthened food security.
The ministry noted that figs are valued for their high nutritional content and are rich in essential vitamins and minerals. It added that the Kingdom is home to more than 565,600 fruit-bearing fig trees cultivated across all regions, with the most well-known varieties including Brown Turkey, Sultani, Spanish Yellow, and Spanish Black.
Locally grown figs are used in the production of confectionery, juices, ice cream, and health and beauty products, enhancing the added value of this local crop and reinforcing its contribution to food security in line with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives.
