Makkah: A Visual Memory Preserving Sanctity of the Place

On World Photography Day, Makkah offers photographers a rich and distinctive visual landscape, featuring scenes and perspectives that blend the sanctity of the holy city with the diversity of its urban environment.

 The Grand Mosque and the Holy Kaaba are among the most iconic subjects that draw photographers’ lenses. The site offers ever-changing visual scenes from pilgrims circumambulating the Kaaba and long rows of worshippers to the expansive courtyards, minarets, and architectural details.

 During the Hajj and Umrah seasons, photographers capture powerful scenes of solidarity, compassion, and service, from assisting elderly pilgrims and sharing moments of joy upon reaching the Grand Mosque to documenting the smooth movement and organization of crowds.
