KSrelief Supervisor General: Saudi Conjoined Twins Yara and Lara Stable Four Days After Separation
Advisor at the Royal Court and King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) Supervisor General Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, who also leads the medical and surgical team of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program, confirmed that conjoined twins Yara and Lara remain in stable condition four days after their successful separation surgery, performed at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, National Guard, Riyadh.
In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency, Al Rabeeah said: "All the twins' vital signs have returned to normal, and they remain on artificial respiration in the intensive care unit." He added that their intestinal functions have begun to resume and that nutrition will gradually be introduced through a nasogastric feeding tube.
The twins are under close observation and are receiving antibiotics to prevent infection. Al Rabeeah noted that the surgical wounds are healing well and expressed hope that artificial respiration will be discontinued within the next four days.
The twins were conjoined at the lower abdomen, pelvis, the lower portion of the small intestine, colon, urinary and reproductive systems, and shared a pelvic bone. A highly complex surgical procedure to separate them was successfully carried out on Thursday, July 17, lasting 12 and a half hours and completed in nine phases.
The operation involved a multidisciplinary team of 38 specialists, including consultants in anesthesia, pediatric surgery, pediatric urology, plastic surgery, and orthopedics, along with supporting nursing and technical staff.
