KFSHRC Performs World’s First Robotic Dual Heart Pump Implant

In a global medical breakthrough, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre KFSHRC in Riyadh has successfully performed the world’s first robotic implantation of two artificial heart pumps (BiVAD-HMIII) in a patient with advanced heart failure.
The procedure, led by Dr. Firas Khaliel, was carried out through small incisions using robotic arms, avoiding traditional open-heart surgery. This approach reduced surgical risks, blood loss, and recovery time, allowing the 61-year-old patient—who was ineligible for a heart transplant due to multiple chronic conditions—to recover quickly.
This achievement reflects the hospital’s leadership in robotic cardiac surgery and follows other global firsts, including the world’s first robotic heart transplant and HeartMate 3 pump implantation.
KFSHRC plans to share the results globally to advance innovation in complex heart care. The hospital is ranked the top academic medical center in the MENA region and 15th worldwide.
