Mawani, DP World Expand Jeddah Islamic Port

The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), in partnership with DP World and under the patronage of Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Saleh Al-Jasser, has launched a SAR3 billion ($800 million) expansion of the South Container Terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port to enhance operational capabilities and increase its capacity from 1.8 million to 4 million TEUs.
Modernization efforts include the implementation of advanced automation, digitization, and smart systems. Gate transaction times will be reduced to 10 seconds through IoT and AI technologies. Automated electric yard cranes and an expanded coastal crane fleet from 14 to 17 by 2025 will enhance operational efficiency. Refrigerated container capacity will increase from 1,200 to 2,340, with DP World developing a facility to inspect 75 refrigerated containers simultaneously.
The terminal's 2,150-meter berth, including an 18-meter deep-water section, will accommodate up to five large container ships at once. Mawani and DP World aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% within five years through electric cranes, trucks, green building designs, and water recycling systems.
DP World is also investing in a 415,000-square-meter logistics area to provide advanced storage, distribution, and shipping services, strengthening Jeddah Islamic Port's position as a key trade link between Asia, Africa, and Europe. The project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2026.
