Arab League Calls for End to Israeli Occupation, Establishment of Independent Palestinian State
The Arab League has called on the United Kingdom and the international community to step up pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities to end violations and crimes against the Palestinian people and advance the implementation of the two-state solution, leading to the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In a statement issued today to mark the 109th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, the Arab League paid tribute to the sacrifices and steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their adherence to their land and legitimate, inalienable rights. These include the right to self-determination, an end to the illegal Israeli occupation, and the establishment of an independent, sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law, relevant international resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative.
The Arab League noted that the Balfour Declaration marked a pivotal turning point in the historical developments that led to the Nakba, the displacement of the Palestinian people, and the denial of their legitimate national rights. It added that violations against the Palestinian people continued in its aftermath and persist to this day.
The Arab League welcomed measures taken by the UK government, notably its recognition of the State of Palestine, the imposition of sanctions on Israeli officials for inciting violence against Palestinians, and its announcement of a decision to ban imports of products from illegal Israeli settlements established on occupied Palestinian territory.
The league described these measures as positive steps toward addressing the historical injustice inflicted on the Palestinian people, while stressing the need to complete the necessary procedures for their implementation.
