UN Says 1.3 Million People in Gaza in Urgent Need of Adequate Shelter amid Cold, Rain
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that humanitarian workers continue to assist the most vulnerable families in the Gaza Strip as cold weather and rainfall intensify.
The Gender in Humanitarian Action Working Group (GiHA WG), led by UN Women in cooperation with the Palestinian Women’s Affairs Center, warned that 75 percent of female-headed households are in critical need of shelter support, while nearly two-thirds are in urgent need of clothing.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that UN partners are working to improve access to adequate shelter for approximately 1.3 million people across the Gaza Strip. He noted that nearly 3,500 families received tents, beds, mattresses, and blankets over the past week, while more than 250,000 children were provided with winter clothing. However, he added that around 630,000 adolescents are still in need of winter clothing assistance.
Dujarric reported that the UN received information over the past 24 hours regarding airstrikes, shelling, and gunfire that resulted in injuries and disrupted humanitarian operations in the area.
