NCVC Organizes Workshop on Rare and Endangered Plants in Saudi Arabia

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) organized a workshop titled “Rare and Endangered Plants in Saudi Arabia,” bringing together a select group of researchers and academics, representatives of government entities, and national companies. The workshop aims to strengthen national scientific efforts to protect and sustain plant diversity.

According to a press release issued by the NCVC today, the workshop addressed several scientific themes, including an introduction to lists of endemic, rare, and endangered plants. It also highlighted the concept of rarity and the application of its criteria at both national and global levels, and discussion sessions on the national list of endemic plants, rare and endangered endemic plant species, as well as rare and endangered non-endemic species.

The workshop aims to brief specialists, interested stakeholders, and relevant parties on the National List of Rare and Endangered Plants developed by NCVC. The list was compiled following a comprehensive process of inventorying, verifying, and refining all available lists, culminating in a consolidated national list of rare and endangered species. It is intended to serve as a scientific reference for specialists and concerned entities, and is regularly updated and enhanced under the NCVC’s supervision.

The release added that specialists from Saudi universities, government entities, and national companies, including NEOM and Red Sea Global, also took part, underscoring the importance of cross-sector integration to protect plant diversity in Saudi Arabia and advance environmental sustainability targets.

NCVC continues to develop, protect, and monitor vegetation cover sites across Saudi Arabia and rehabilitate degraded areas. The center also seeks to detect encroachments, combat illegal woodcutting, and oversee and invest in rangelands, forests, and national parks in order to support sustainable development and contribute to the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative.
