Beyond the 5G Horizon: How Saudi Arabia’s Digital Ambition is Re-shaping Global Connectivity

As one of the world's leading 5G markets, Saudi Arabia is far beyond keeping pace with digital development. It is setting an example.

The Kingdom was among the first countries to launch 5G, and today it operates some of the fastest mobile networks anywhere in the world. Behind those numbers sits a deeper story about a nation determined to connect its people and its businesses to whatever comes next. This is what it looks like when a country decides to build the future.

And the future is arriving quickly. Artificial intelligence is moving out of centralized data centers and into the world around us, embedded in devices, vehicles and entire cities as distributed, autonomous agents. That shift changes what we ask of mobile networks. They are becoming critical intelligent infrastructure, expected to carry demanding new services with performance that just was not required a few years ago.

That conviction is why we anchored our regional headquarters in Riyadh, ensuring we work side-by-side to realize a shared vision for tomorrow's connectivity. Our strategy for the region takes shape here: a focal point for innovation, collaboration and talent development that puts us in the room as the Kingdom builds what comes next.

The rise of differentiated connectivity

The latest Ericsson Mobility Report points to a clear appetite for differentiated connectivity and premium services, and the numbers are striking. In the Gulf Cooperation Council region, 5G subscription penetration reached 53 percent at the end of 2025, one of the highest rates in the world. By 2031, 5G is forecast to make up 88 percent of all mobile subscriptions across the GCC, totaling 84 million.

That growth is fueling an unprecedented hunger for data. Average monthly mobile data per active smartphone is projected to climb from 30 GB in 2025 to 49 GB in 2031. To keep up, communication service providers are reshaping their networks around predictable performance, and that is where the real opportunity lies.

By exposing network capabilities as APIs, we turn the network into a platform for innovation. The momentum is visible: commercial offerings using network slicing to deliver guaranteed performance has surged to 84 globally, up sharply from just six months ago. That means operators can monetize the moments that matter, unlocking fresh revenue where the demand for flawless connectivity spikes.

Advancing mission critical and enterprise transformation

Some networks cannot afford to fail. As a trusted partner and the market leader in the 3GPP mission critical network equipment space, we help organizations build the resilient systems that critical operations depend on. Our recent deployments across the Kingdom are a good example. We partnered with Specialized by stc to advance mission critical communication networks, and we are working with Saudi Arabia Railways to modernize rail operations using 5G. These collaborations deliver reliable, secure communication built for environments where mistakes are not an option. Our work with Mobily, meanwhile, continues to power the Hajj pilgrimage with AI and expanded 5G coverage for millions of travelers.

Deepening ecosystem and government partnerships

None of this happens in isolation. A core priority for the year ahead is deepening our ecosystem and government partnerships to drive the Kingdom's national digital goals. Our recent five-year master frame agreement with stc Group reflects that commitment, helping to advance the digital infrastructure the country will rely on for decades. Partnerships like these are how we build a ready-to-deploy ICT network for 2030 while aligning with the wider ambitions of Vision 2030. We are also pursuing new opportunities to grow our research and development footprint and collaborate on major government initiatives.

Leading the next wave of 5G and 6G innovation

As we celebrate 150 years of driving global technology innovation, our 48-year history in Saudi Arabia stands out as one of our most defining chapters, fueled by a mutual commitment to being at the forefront of technology leadership. Leading the next wave of 5G and eventually 6G demands a strong research and development foundation, so we are working to strengthen local R&D capabilities and nurture innovation ecosystems in partnership with government, academia and enterprise.

Empowering local talent for the future

Innovation is not possible without capable, passionate people. Through Vision 2030-aligned initiatives run from our Riyadh headquarters, we keep investing in local talent and in the ecosystem that powers Saudi Arabia's digital transformation. Building on the success of our Fresh Graduate Program and our R&D collaborations with institutions such as King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, our SPHERE program is already accelerating talent development and helping ensure the next generation of Saudi professionals is ready to lead the future of connectivity.

The Kingdom has already shown the world what it can achieve. From our region headquarters in Riyadh, we are proud to help shape what comes next, not as a visitor to Saudi Arabia's digital future but as a partner invested in building it.
